The Fireworks Galaxy (again)

Here's another image of the Fireworks Galaxy. This one is the result of just over 15 hours of integration. Notice how much more detail is visible than in the image on the last post, especially in the dust lanes of the galaxy.

"Deforking" an ETX

I had a couple of emails asking how to defork an ETX telescope. The ETX 90 and ETX 125 were optically superb scopes, but the mounts left a lot to be desired, especially the early models. I deforked my 125 a while back and it works very well on both my EQPro and ZEQ 25 mounts (although I am much more comfortable with it on the ZEQ!). My old 90 model (a 1995-vintage non-goto scope--I think Meade referred to this model as the  ETX 90 RA) worked pretty well on 3 AA batteries. Tracking was decent enough for visual work and for imaging bright, solar system objects. The other day, I dusted it off for some solar imaging and found that (most likely) the circuit board had died. I decided to defork the OTA so I could use it with the iOptron mounts. Messier 106

 After a long break due to an extended period of cloud and rain here in the Carolinas, I was finally able to get some imaging time. As it's late Spring, galaxies are the most promising imaging subjects. While galaxies are not the most idea objects to image with a RASA scope, the Mallincam DS10C allows some quite aggressive cropping, which enables me to get a decent image scale. One of the more interesting, prominent targets is Messier 106. Discovered in 1781, M106 has an active, galactic nucleus powered by a central supermassive black hole and is classed as a Type 2 Seyfert Galaxy.  I've imaged M106 and number of times, and I combined those images with those I took the night before last, for a total of 860 images. These images are a mixture of white light and narrowband data, with integration times ranging from 6 seconds to 45 seconds. The total integration times was just over 3.5 hours. The iOptron ZEQ25 Mount: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly--An Owner's Review

Note the lovely Christmas rug :) As an astronomer, I made the unwise choice of buying a home surrounded by dense woodland. As a result, my main scope, a 14 inch Meade ACF, is located at my observatory, about 2 miles away. While that’s much more convenient than my old dark sky site, which was 8 miles away, there are times (especially in winter) when I just want to set up an imaging run and return to the warmth of my living room. I also wanted to have a portable imaging system I could take with me on trips to other dark sky locations.
